Pastors spend their lives caring for others. They preach God’s Word, counsel families, encourage believers, and lead churches through challenges and seasons of growth. Yet pastors themselves need encouragement, instruction, and fellowship. Healthy churches are often the fruit of healthy pastors who faithfully walk with Christ and lead God’s people according to His Word.
With that conviction in mind, Bread of Hope recently hosted our second Wayuu Pastors Conference in La Guajira, Colombia. Pastors and church leaders from Wayuu communities gathered for several days of biblical teaching, fellowship, and encouragement centered on faithful leadership and healthy churches.
We were honored to welcome Pastor Brian Peterson from Lebanon Baptist Church and Chris Anderson from Church Works Media, who taught on the importance of personal godliness, faithful pastoral leadership, and the role of healthy churches in fulfilling Christ’s mission. Through Scripture, they challenged and encouraged these indigenous leaders to watch over their own lives and doctrine as they shepherd the churches entrusted to their care.
At the same time, Brian’s and Chris’s wives spent dedicated time with the pastors’ wives. Together they discussed the biblical role of women in the church, the unique opportunities and challenges of supporting their husbands in ministry, and ways they can encourage and disciple other women in their communities. These conversations provided meaningful encouragement for women who often serve faithfully behind the scenes.
One of the most encouraging aspects of the conference was hearing directly from the participants. Several pastors shared how the teaching brought clarity to areas where they desired to grow. Others expressed gratitude for the opportunity to gather with fellow believers who share the same calling and challenges. For many, the conference was both a time of learning and a reminder that they are not serving alone.
We were also able to distribute Proclaimers containing the entire audio Bible in Wayuunaiki. These solar-powered audio Bibles are especially valuable in communities where literacy levels vary, and access to biblical resources is limited. One pastor received his Proclaimer with tears in his eyes and said, “I have been praying for one of these.”
Moments like these remind us why leadership development remains such an important part of our ministry. Last year, Bread of Hope entered the Empower phase of our long-term strategy among the Wayuu people. During this season, we are focusing on strengthening indigenous churches and leaders so that they can faithfully shepherd their communities and carry the work of the Gospel forward for generations to come.
As we look back on this year’s conference, we are deeply encouraged by the continued growth we are witnessing in the Wayuu church. God is raising up faithful indigenous leaders, strengthening local congregations, and expanding access to His Word.
