For years, we have prayed that the Scriptures would not simply arrive among the Wayuu people, but that God’s Word would take root—heard in their language, understood by their leaders, taught in their churches, and ultimately lived out in their communities. This year, we are seeing important steps in that journey.
Across La Guajira, the Word of God is being heard, taught, and lived.
The Word Is Being Heard
For many years, one of our deepest desires has been to see the Wayuu people have access to the complete Word of God in their own heart language. That vision has taken an important step forward.
Through the Proclaimers, portable audio devices containing the complete Bible in Wayuunaiki, the Scriptures are reaching more homes and communities. These devices allow families and individuals to listen to God’s Word in a language they understand deeply.
For many Wayuu believers, hearing the New Testament in their language is not new. But now, with the completion of the full Audio Bible, many will have the opportunity to hear the Old Testament in Wayuunaiki for the very first time. This matters deeply in a culture where oral communication remains central. A small device can travel to places where books are difficult to access. It can be carried into remote rancherías, shared with a neighbor, or played in the home. And as the Scriptures are heard, we pray that hearts will be awakened to the truth of the Gospel.
The Word Is Being Taught
But access to the Bible is only part of the journey. The Word of God must also be understood, taught faithfully, and applied to life. This is why the Sembradores Bible training program remains at the heart of Bread of Hope’s ministry. For the past several years, indigenous Wayuu leaders have gathered to study Scripture, grow in their understanding of the Gospel, and develop the tools needed to teach others. The goal has never simply been to fill classrooms with information. Our prayer has been to equip faithful men who can return to their communities and help others understand and live God’s Word.
And this year marks an especially significant milestone. For the first time, Wayuu leaders are leading the Sembradores training. Edwin, who has walked through years of training and ministry alongside Bread of Hope, is now helping lead and teach other indigenous leaders. Other Wayuu men are also stepping forward, preparing to become Bible teachers and disciplers among their own people.
This is exactly what we have prayed for. Our desire has never been for Bread of Hope to remain at the center of ministry among the Wayuu. Our hope is to see the Wayuu church strengthened and equipped to carry the responsibility of teaching, discipling, and reaching its own people. There is something profoundly encouraging about seeing a leader who was once being trained now stand before others and open the Scriptures. The Word that was taught is now being taught again. This is multiplication.
The Word Is Being Lived
But the ultimate goal of Bible teaching is not simply greater knowledge. God’s Word is meant to shape the life of His people. That is why, alongside Bible training, we are continuing to walk intentionally with local Wayuu churches. Through mentoring, pastoral guidance, leadership development, and ongoing training, we are helping churches grow stronger in their identity and calling.
What does it mean to be Christ’s church? What does faithful leadership look like? How can a congregation care for one another, disciple younger believers, and serve its community? These are some of the questions we are working through together.
Our hope is to see churches that are not dependent on outside ministries, but are increasingly able to stand on the foundation of God’s Word and faithfully carry out their mission. A healthy church is more than a gathering of people on Sunday. It is a community being shaped by the Gospel. It is believers learning to love one another. It is leaders shepherding faithfully. It is families growing in their understanding of Christ. It is the church becoming a light within its own community.
And this is where the Word moves from being heard and taught to being lived.
We know this kind of transformation does not happen overnight. Churches grow slowly. Leaders need encouragement. Old patterns and cultural pressures do not disappear easily. But we believe God works through His Word.
Looking Forward with Hope
As we look back on this year, we are deeply encouraged by what God is doing. The full Scriptures are becoming more accessible in Wayuunaiki. Indigenous leaders are teaching God’s Word. Local churches are receiving encouragement and guidance as they grow in their identity and mission. Much work remains to be done, but we are grateful for the progress we see.
The Word of God is being heard. The Word of God is being taught. And, by God’s grace, the Word of God is being lived among the Wayuu people.
